When a national passenger rail service began looking for a more cost-effective glove for its electric traction team, they needed to ensure that a lower price would not mean lower performance. A trial of the Chrome SLT® 5081 cut glove costs without sacrificing wear life – some workers even reported longer use per pair.
The problem: High-performing, but high-cost safety gloves
Keeping a passenger rail powered requires skilled, hands-on work and dependable hand protection – especially for the electric traction team. They are responsible for maintaining critical infrastructure across the network – including overhead catenary systems, traction power substations, and other electrical distribution equipment.
The Youngstown ground glove the team was using held up to the worksite hazards, but its price was driving up yearly costs. With approximately 13,000 pairs used each year, the organization saw an opportunity to reduce its PPE spend by finding a more cost-effective alternative.
Any replacement, however, still needed to meet the team’s performance expectations. A lower price would only deliver real savings if the new glove could provide enough protection and wear life under regular use, without increasing the need for multiple replacements.
The solution: The Chrome SLT® 5081

The team’s distribution partner recommended HexArmor®, and after learning about the Chrome SLT® utility glove lineup, the passenger rail provider decided to trial the Chrome SLT® 5081 as a more cost-effective alternative to the Youngstown glove.
The 5081 offered the same A4 cut level at a lower cost per pair, but price was only one part of the decision. Before making a switch, the team needed to see whether the glove could provide the durability and wear life workers were already getting from the Youngstown glove option.
The Chrome SLT® 5081 combines a 360-degree cut-resistant aramid liner with flame-resistant leather, stitching, and liner materials. It is Arc Flash CAT 4 rated and includes goatskin abrasion patches across the palm for added durability in high-wear areas. Water-resistant goatskin leather helps the glove stand up to regular use, while its form-fitting design and ergonomic finger construction support the dexterity workers need for detailed tasks.
During the trial, the features translated into durability, and the Chrome SLT® 5081 held up just as long as the Youngstown glove – and in some cases, even longer – giving the team confidence that the lower purchase price could translate into meaningful long-term savings.
The results: More than $100K in projected annual savings
The Chrome SLT® 5081 delivered the cost reduction the passenger rail provider was looking for without giving up the wear life the team depended on.
With approximately 13,000 pairs being used each year, the switch is expected to deliver:
