After decades in the asphalt industry, Patrick Albig had learned to expect compromise from his work boots. Most either wore out too fast, became uncomfortable, or started causing pain before the season was over. But after trialing HexArmor’s HeatArmor™ Asphalt boots, Albig finally found a boot that changed what he expected from safety footwear.
The problem: Work boots that couldn’t keep up with asphalt
For Patrick Albig, a paving foreman at Hutch Paving, work boots have never had an easy job. With 33 years of experience in the asphalt industry and more than 20 years as a foreman, Albig spends full paving seasons on his feet, logging between 18,000 and 25,000 steps a day across parking lots, roads, and job sites from April through November.
That kind of environment puts constant stress on footwear. Between the heat, long hours, abrasive surfaces, and daily movement, Albig had grown used to boots breaking down long before the season was over. Most years, he went through two pairs per season, often spending $270–$300 a pair. Over time, he'd tried just about every brand he could find – but the problems kept repeating.
- Brunt: Fell apart in 3 weeks.
- Bonanza: Fell apart in a month.
- Cofra: Lasted maybe four months, and the insoles were so uncomfortable that his sons, who wore them, threw them out immediately.
- Red Wing: Lacked breathability; wearing them felt like sticking his feet in a bucket.
- Hawks: Just not comfortable.
- Carolina: The most durable option he'd found – well-sewn and long-lasting – but by midseason, they were causing knee pain bad enough that he couldn't ignore it.
The insoles were a recurring failure point across every brand. Albig had tried every aftermarket option on the market and noticed something frustrating: the more expensive the insole, the worse it performed. Nothing delivered the right combination of cushioning, breathability, and lasting support for a full day on hot asphalt.
The clearest sign of how bad it had gotten? At the end of every shift, Albig would swap his work boots for tennis shoes just to make the drive home. His boots were simply too painful to keep wearing.
The solution: Putting the HeatArmor™ boots to work
HexArmor® first connected with Hutch Paving at the Asphalt and Paving Association of Michigan trade show, where the team had the opportunity to discuss the demands asphalt crews face on the job. From that conversation, Hutch Paving selected Albig to trial the HeatArmor™ asphalt boot on behalf of their team.
After cycling through nearly every boot on the market, he'd grown skeptical that anything new would actually perform differently. But as soon as he started wearing the HeatArmor™ boot, the difference was immediate.
The results: Comfort that lasted beyond the shift

After several weeks in the HeatArmor™ Asphalt boots, the differences showed up in the areas that mattered most to Albig: comfort, heat resistance, fit, and everyday wearability.
1. Comfort and fit: There was no break-in period. The uppers felt comfortable from the first wear, giving Albig a different experience than what he was used to with other work boots. The fit also stood out. As someone who had not previously worn safety-toe boots and was skeptical of whether he needed one, Albig was surprised by how natural the boot felt.
2. Heat resistance: Heat was another noticeable difference. On road work, where Albig is often standing for longer periods of time, he said he does not feel the heat coming through the sole the way he has with other boots. For someone working on and around hot asphalt throughout the season, that was a meaningful change.
3. Easy to clean: The boots were also easy to clean at the end of the day, an important detail in asphalt work where buildup, grime, and daily exposure are part of the job.
4. Less pain: But the clearest sign of improvement came after the shift was over. With previous boots, Albig would change into tennis shoes before driving home because his work boots were too uncomfortable to keep wearing. With HeatArmor™, that changed. He experienced a notable improvement in how his feet felt after wearing the boots all day – no aches or pains.
For someone who has spent 33 years in asphalt and tried nearly every boot on the market, that difference says a lot. The HeatArmor™ Asphalt boot gave Albig what he had been looking for across decades of work: immediate comfort, less heat transfer, a natural fit, and footwear built to handle the realities of paving season.
